VICTORIA - DOWNTOWN
 - CVF Capital City Walk, Community and Mural Programs

Location: YM-YWCA 851 Broughton St (V8W 1E5)
The YM-YWCA is at the corner of Broughton and Quadra Streets (250-386-7511) in downtown Victoria. Pay parking nearby. Free meter parking on Sundays and holidays. The Y is about 6 blocks from the harbour, one block off the main road from the BC ferries and 3 blocks from the centre of the city. From BC Ferry Terminal and Victoria Int'l Airport: south on Patricia Bay Hwy, (becomes Blanshard Street). Left on Broughton St.

Trail: 5/5/10/15 km      Rating: 1A
Registration: There is a large cabinet on lower level of the YM-YWCA (beside the pop machine).

Hours: Mon-Fri: 5:30am-10:30pm, Sat: 7:30am- 9pm, Sun: 7:30am-7:30pm. Holiday hours: 8am-4pm. Closed Good Friday and Christmas. Be off the trail by dusk. Call to confirm holiday hours 250-386-7511

Walk Descriptions

5km Route 1 – Beacon Hill
.  An easy walk, mostly pavement that goes past Victoria’s Working Harbour, Legislative Buildings and through Beacon Hill Park.  It is a mini version of the 10km.

5km Route 1 - Fernwood.  This walk allows you to wander through Government House gardens, past Craigdarroch Castle, “quirky” Fernwood with its many heritage homes and the Belfry Theatre (a former Church).  If you promise to be quiet you can go up the stairs and take a peek inside at the Lobby that used to be the Sunday School.

10km Route 1.  A memorable Capital City Walk that will take you through Downtown, along Victoria's "Working" Harbour with its Marinas, ferries and float planes.  Around the Legislative Buildings (tours & Gift Shop avail), through Beacon Hill Park & its beautiful gardens.  Enjoy the view of the Olympic Mountains walking along Dallas Road. Enjoy the gardens at Government House and the magnificent masonry of Craigdarroch Castle.

5km Route 2. Rockland Av with its magnificent mansions, Government House gardens, Moss Rock Park with a great view of the Olympic Mountains. Return through Fairfield, along streets with a magnificent canopy of mature trees and enjoy the variety of Edwardian and Victorian homes.

10km Route 2
. Walk around a tree in the middle of a road, past mansions in Rockland, Craigdarroch Castle and Government House with its magnificent gardens.  Walk through Fairfield residential area & up a short trail to Moss Rock Park for a wonderful view of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Olympic Mountains.  Continue through Fairfield to Dallas Road. (On left is historic Ross Bay Cemetery, well worth visiting). Return through some tiny streets and lanes in James Bay followed by a stroll through Beacon Hill Park and its beautiful gardens.

Washrooms are available at start/finish and on route. Mostly suitable for baby strollers or wheelchairs. Pets must be on leash & scoop law is in effect. These walks will also be done as a group. Call to confirm hours 250-386-7511.

VICTORIA – ESQUIMALT

Location: Esquimalt Recreation Centre, 527 Fraser Street (V9A 6H6)
From downtown Victoria, take the Johnson Street bridge to Esquimalt Road, left on Fraser Street. From BC Ferry Terminal and Victoria Int'l Airport: south on Patricia Bay Hwy, right on Johnson St. to Esquimalt Rd., left on Fraser St. Esquimalt Rec Ctre is on the left. Free parking. Take #6 bus (Esquimalt) Yates St. at Broad St.

Trail: 5/5/10/15/20/25/30/35 km         Rating: 2B
Registration: Ask for Volkssport Walk Binder at the Registration Desk by the Front Entrance

Hours: Sunday to Saturday 5:30am to 10:30pm. Be off the trail by dusk. Call 250-412-8500 to confirm holiday hours

Walk Descriptions:

5km Route 1 – Saxe Point Park
: This easy scenic walk combines pavement and trails.  Beautiful gardens and views at Saxe Point Park followed by more spectacular views as you follow the trails around Macaulay Pt. and return through residential areas of Esquimalt

5km Route 1 – Highrock Park:
This mostly paved walk goes through residential Esquimalt, along Westsong Walkway with views of the Olympics and lower sections of Highrock Park

If you want you can combine the two 5k routes for a very easy 10k figure of eight route.


10km Route 1
: A combination of pavement and trails takes you through Saxe Point Park, around Macaulay Point for an extended view of the Olympic Mountains and Juan de Fuca Strait. Continue past Work Point Barracks and West Bay Marina (Princess Mary Restaurant is a great place to stop for coffee or a meal) and onto Westsong Walkway.  Then north through another residential area to Cairn Park for an “inland” view of Saanich & return via memorial Park and Town Square.

15km Route
: (TCT/Pavilion):  This route is the same as the 10km (above) however, it follows West Song Walkway to the end, over the Blue Bridge, through China Town and back across the bridge to the Galloping Goose (Trans Canada Trail), past the Pavilion and through Banfield Park. Continue through “old Esquimalt”, parts of Rock Heights and return through Memorial Park and Esquimalt Town Square.

5/10km Route 2: This walk, mostly paved, explores Old Esquimalt.  A very nice view overlooking Esquimalt Naval Dockyard, (the CFB Esquimalt Naval and Military Museum is worth a visit).  Then on the paved trail alongside the E&N Rail line with a detour through Cdn Forces Base (Naden), to God’s Acre – A Veterans Cemetery in the middle of a Golf Course (watch for golf balls).  Return through “Old Esquimalt” passing by some newly restored Heritage homes

6km Route 2:  This walk does not go to God’s Acre.  It goes through parks, “Old Esquimalt” and along sections of the paved trail beside the E&N rail line.

Washrooms are available at start/finish and on route. Not entirely suitable for baby strollers or wheelchairs. Pets must be on leash & scoop law is in effect. Walks will also be done as a group. Ask reception for Walk Binder. Call to confirm hours 250-412-8500

(NB:  There are two Sanctions at this location.  Each walk has its own Registration Sheets and Stamp.
PT 015 Waterfront Walk and PT 256 Lighthouse Walk).
Please sign in on the correct sheets and use appropriate stamp.

PT 015 Waterfront Walk:

5km Route: This is an easy walk that goes behind Oak Bay High School, follows a portion of Bowker Creek Walkway and various streets to Willows Beach (look for Mt Baker on a clear day). Return along parts of the Centennial Trail

10km Route: Walk through Bowker Creek Walkway, Estevan Village, pass by historic Todd House, explore Camus Trail and Willows Beach  Continue along Esplanade, walk along “no name street” and around Turkey Head.  (Feed the seals, enjoy coffee overlooking the boats at Oak Bay Marina).  Continue along Beach Dr with its waterfront mansions and spectacular gardens. Take a few minutes for a side trip into Anderson Hill Park for a fabulous view of the Olympic Mountains and Juan de Fuca Strait then through residential Oak Bay including some back alleys and part of the Centennial Trail.

11km Route 1: Through Bowker Creek Walkway and Oak Bay streets to Historic Cattle Point with magnificent views overlooking the Salish Sea, Mt Baker, Gulf Islands and San Juan Islands.  Walk along The Esplanade beside Willows Beach to Turkey Head – have a coffee overlooking the Marina. Enjoy the water front mansions and their gardens along beach Drive and return through residential areas and Oak Bay Village.

 

 

11km Route 2: As this route follows various streets in residential Oak Bay you will see many styles of housing – small, large, old and new.  Walk along McNeill Bay, into Anderson Hill Park for stunning views of the Olympics and Juan de Fuca Strait, returning via Turkey Head Walkway and Oak Bay Marina (make sure you visit the resident seals). Continue along the waterfront & back through Bowker Creek Walkway

After the Walk:  Coffee/lunch available at the Sports View Bar & Grill – upstairs at Oak Bay Rec Centre.

Washrooms are available at the Start/Finish and on route. These walks will also be done as a group. Check with contact for dates and times. Pets must be on leash and scoop law is in effect.

PT 256 Lighthouse Walk:
Bring a picnic lunch or buy snacks along the way.

5km Route: A paved walk taking you past some interesting houses to McNeill Bay for a nice view of Trial Island Lighthouse.  On the way back watch for the house with the “rats on the roof and the plates on the fence”. Detour through Oak Bay Village for tea or a meal before returning along Bowker Creek Walkway.

10km Route: This walk is mostly pavement and wanders through residential Oak Bay with its beautiful homes and gardens, along McNeill Bay and spectacular views of the Olympics and Trial Islands. (Lunch or snack on the beach with the best view of the Lighthouse and channel at the end of Radcliffe Lane). Return through Bowker Creek Walkway. You can also take a short detour through Oak Bay Village for tea or a meal and visit the many interesting shops along Oak Bay Avenue

Washrooms are available at the Start/Finish and on route. These walks will also be done as a group. Check with contact for dates and times. Pets must be on leash and scoop law is in effect.

After the Walk:
Coffee/lunch available at the Sports View Bar & Grill – upstairs at Oak Bay Rec Centre.

 


VICTORIA – SAANICH
 – Community and Trans Canada Programs (10km Rte 2)

From downtown, drive north on Blanshard St, turn right on Finlayson St, turn left on Cedar Hill Rd. From BC Ferry Terminal and Victoria International Airport: south on Patricia Bay Hwy (Hwy 17), turn left on Finlayson St. turn left on Cedar Hill Rd. Cedar Hill Rec Centre is on your left. Bus # 24 (Cedar Hill) from Johnson St. at Broad St.

Trail: 5/6/10/11 km         Rating: 2B
Registration: Ask for Walk Box at Registration desk in Main Lobby

Hours: Mon-Fri: 6:30am - 10:00pm; Sat and Sun: 8am - 9:00pm; Holidays: Call to confirm holiday hours 250-475-7121. Be off the trail by dusk.

Walk Descriptions:

5km and 6km Route 1: Same as 10km and 11km routes with a turn-around point in Playfair Park.

10km Route 1: Follow the trails up one side of Cedar Hill Municipal Golf Course.  Have some laughs watching the ducks at Kings Pond.  Continue along various streets and connecting pathways through Playfair Park (great Rhododendron displays in the Spring) to the trail around Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary. Come back through Playfair Park and along the trails on the other side of the Golf Course (some nice views over the city from the highest points along the Golf Course).

11km Route 1: This route is the same as the 10km route however, it includes a loop that passes Ecole Doncaster Elementary School.

5km Route 2: Very similar route to the 10km but does not include Uptown Mall or Trans Canada Trail.

10km Route 2:  Explore small parks and interesting streets.  Walk goes through Uptown Mall and along a section of Trans Canada Trail.  Return through narrow streets and the chip trails on the east side of Cedar Hill Golf Course.


Note:
  The Clubhouse (upstairs) is open to the public for coffee or soup ‘n sandwich lunch.
